Backup and restore guide

How to Back Up and Restore Your Notes

Your notes are saved in this browser and do not automatically sync to other devices. Create a backup file to keep a separate copy, then restore or merge it when needed.

How to Download a Complete Notes Backup

  1. Wait until the notepad shows Saved in this browser for your latest changes.
  2. Choose Back up all notes below the notes list, or open More and choose the same option.
  3. Keep the downloaded .json file somewhere you can find again, such as a trusted folder or backup drive.

The JSON backup contains your notes and their organization, including notes in Trash. It is a portable copy; making one does not turn on cloud sync.

How to Restore Notes from a Backup

  1. Open Designs24hr Notes in the browser where you want to restore your notes.
  2. Choose Import / restore below the notes list, or open More and choose Import TXT / restore backup.
  3. Select the Designs24hr Notes .json backup file. Review the preview before continuing.
  4. Choose whether to merge the backup with current notes or replace the current collection, then confirm the restore.

For a move to another device, transfer the backup file yourself. Notes are stored per browser and device, so they will not appear on the new device until you import the file.

Merge vs. Replace: What Happens to Existing Notes?

Merge with my notes

Merge is the recommended option when you want to keep notes already in this browser. Existing notes stay in place; identical records are skipped, and conflicting copies are kept separately.

Replace all my notes

Replace swaps the current collection, including Trash, for the contents of the selected backup. Use it only when you intend to replace what is currently stored in this browser. Keep a separate copy of anything you may need before confirming.

Importing and Exporting Individual TXT Notes

Use Import / restore to select a plain-text .txt file. The app creates it as a new note. A TXT file does not restore a collection of separate notes; use a Designs24hr Notes .json backup for that.

You can also download one open note as TXT from More → Download TXT. This is useful for keeping or sharing a readable copy of a single note.

Why Backing Up Browser Notes Matters

Backup files are not encrypted by the app. Anyone who can open the file can read its contents, so store it somewhere you trust and avoid including passwords or other sensitive records in notes.

Make a fresh backup before clearing browser data, changing devices, or replacing a collection. For details about browser storage and privacy, read the privacy policy. For offline use, see the offline setup guide.

Troubleshooting Backup Problems

Does the notepad back up notes automatically?

It saves notes in the current browser, but it does not create or store a separate backup file for you. Use Back up all notes occasionally and keep the downloaded file safe.

Will a backup sync notes between devices?

No. Transfer the JSON file yourself and import it in the other browser. See the offline help page for details about local browser storage.

What if a backup will not import?

Confirm that you selected a valid Designs24hr Notes JSON backup and that the file finished downloading. Your current notes are not changed unless you confirm a restore. If the problem continues, visit help and support.

What if the collection changed during restore?

Choose the backup again to create a fresh preview. The app checks the collection before restoring so a stale preview does not silently replace newer edits.

What if storage is full?

Download important text first. The app supports up to 1,000 notes including Trash, 1 MiB of text per note and 8 MiB of total text; browser storage may run out sooner. Resolve the visible error before closing the page.
